Welcome to episode #001 of The Crisis Intelligence podcast with Captain Chris Hsiung and Shino Tanaka.

When I think “crisis intelligence” I immediately think of the Mountain View Police Department in Silicon Valley. What this police department is doing to engage with their community on social media and how they’ve integrated social media as a core part of their crisis communications and emergency management plan is simply inspiring.

Within this episode, I speak with Captain Chris Hsiung and Shino Tanaka about the role that social media and real-time communications play within Mountain View PD’s crisis and emergency management. We discuss what they call their “bank of community trust”, how they’ve integrated social media and the Mountain View community into the core communications structure of MVPD, and of course the lessons they’ve learned along the way.

Captain Hsiung and Shino also share a recent crisis that they experienced when a mountain lion was spotted within city limits, how they leveraged social media to keep citizens safe and how #MVpuma became a nationally trending hashtag – and what that meant for the success of their crisis communications.

It’s a conversation that impressed and inspired me. I hope it does the same for you. Enjoy!

Love the new podcast series! Excellent interview with the forward thinking, "walking their talk" Mountain View PD. Capt Hsiung and Shino lay out a great case study for consistent, positive engagement for law enforcement. Interested in learning how they are using "Next Door" – similar to how it's being used on Oakalnd and others around the Bay Area?

      Hi Suzanne,

I'm glad you enjoyed the podcast! I'll ask them about Next Door and see what they respond.

The information and the speakers were both excellent. A shorter podcast would get more attention.

Glad you enjoyed the podcast. Each episode will range between 30 – 60 minutes, depending on the conversation. I know from research that people like longer podcasts to listen to on the go, which is why it's available on iTunes and Stitcher. But I very much appreciate your feedback. I hope you keep on listening!

Melissa,The podcast from Mountain View PD is excellent. If I wanted to take short clips from it (total 7-8 minutes) to share with emergency managers, can this be done. Can I have permission to do so?Best regard,Dr. Tom Phelan

          Melissa
