Stop Attempting to Withhold and Control on Social Media!
Social media is about openness, transparency, community, conversation, real-time and sharing. It consists of an array of platforms that enable each and every individual to have a voice. Where – other than unacceptable, derogatory and bigoted remarks and comments – there are no direct rules or restraints. It’s about creativity and coming together.
The 2012 Olympics were labelled the “Social Olympics”, yet I remain to be disappointed at every turn. All I see over and over are restraints, attempts at control and a thorough lack of proper understanding.
From the IOC’s social media policy that is much too restrictive and constraining, to NBC who keeps making their own decisions on who should see what and when. Yes, television coverage does not count towards social media, but we sure can hear the cries, outrage and disappointment of the people across social media and it all plays in together.
What is going on?
Are we going to begin to see more and more companies and organizations attempt to withhold and control whatever is in their power to withhold and control? We see this type of control and withholding within the news and in politics. Will we begin to see it on social media now as well? I sincerely hope not, and I assure you that such attempts will not be well received and will only hurt the companies and organizations who wrongfully attempt such control.
What do you think?
Have these utter and blatant attempts at control got you as stirred up and disappointed as I am? I want to hear what you have to say! Leave your comments, opinions and thoughts below.
